Research & Academic Work

Regional Planning · Development · Investment · Tourism

One question runs through this work: what makes a place competitive? Regional development, investment, tourism and economic policy are not separate literatures here — they are four ways of examining the same object.

IResearch Areas

Seven lines of enquiry.

  • 01

    Regional Planning

Planning frameworks, spatial logic and the alignment of local potential with national and European priorities.

  • 02

    Regional Development

How territories change: competitiveness, human capital, infrastructure and institutional capacity.

  • 03

    Foreign Direct Investment

Investment location decisions and their relationship to regional planning — the core doctoral line.

  • 04

    Tourism Policy

Tourism promotion policy, destination positioning and the governance structures that carry them.

  • 05

    Regional Economy

Sectoral structure, employment and culture as components of a regional economic system.

  • 06

    Political Risk

How political events and uncertainty are transmitted into economic and market outcomes.

  • 07

    Financial Markets

Market risk under extreme conditions, including tail-risk behaviour around major political events.

IIIResearch & Practice

Research tested against administration.

Academic work here is not parallel to practice. Policy in regional development, tourism, culture and employment within the Region of Western Greece — annual action plans, European and national programmes — is where research assumptions meet institutional reality, and years of teaching in regional development, tourism policy and destination planning kept the two in conversation.

The applied translations are set out in Regional Development, Tourism Strategy and Investment & FDI.

IVSelected Research

Documented work.

Two documented works, alongside the doctoral research on regional planning and foreign direct investment: a peer-reviewed study of tail risk in UK financial markets around the Brexit vote, and a paper on regional tourism promotion policy in Greece presented at TOURMAN 2019. Full details are listed in Publications & Research.

VMethod

How the questions are approached.

The method is deliberately plural. Regional questions rarely yield to a single instrument: spatial and institutional analysis explains why a territory behaves as it does, quantitative work disciplines the claims that follow, and comparative reading keeps a region measured against real alternatives rather than its own past.

Two commitments hold across the work. First, that development outcomes are produced by institutions as much as by resources — planning capacity, coordination and continuity are variables, not context. Second, that evidence should be usable: a finding that cannot inform a decision, a programme or a positioning choice has not yet been translated. That is the standard applied in Thinking as well.
